Project Name: Duck Key Breakwater Restoration
Location: Duck Key, Monroe County.
Project Duration: 3 years
Project Summary
SFRC&D completed the Duck Key Breakwater Reconstruction project
at Hawk’s Key Resort and Marina in the Florida Keys. This was a 3
million dollar project which was completed in June 30, 2001. The
project was authorized by USDA in March 1999, and SFRC&D was designated
as the overall Project Manager. The breakwater, which was destroyed
by Hurricane Irene, was rebuilt to protect the homes, boats and businesses
on the island from strong waves during storms. SFRC&D also took
the necessary precautions to protect the coral and sea grass near the breakwater.
The Duck Key project is seen by most residents as highly successful especially
considering the many difficult environmental factors involved in the job.
